Visiting Legal Ex last week
Being an organisation that is particularly interested in apprenticeships, and having recently attended a great event by the East of England Co-op, Lorna was keen to attend a presentation on available legal apprenticeships at Legal Ex last week. The presentation was delivered by Damar Training in connection with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers.
What Lorna found interesting was how many people didn't realise there is a dedicated training and qualification route, to progress a legal career without attending university or completing an LPC and training contract.
We feel this is great news for both law firms wanting to attract young new talent and great news for young talent who don't want to leave university with large debts.
While we appreciate an apprenticeship isn't for everyone we thought we would just let you know a few things about them;
For the many SME's an apprenticeship is 90-95% funded by the government (or if you are a levy payer it can be taken out of your pot).
There is no upper age limit on who can and cannot complete an apprenticeship.
An apprentice doesn’t need to be a new recruit in your business.
For existing employees looking to become mature apprentices, their pay and conditions can remain the same.
Apprenticeship Qualifications can go all the way up to Masters Degree level.
Having pre-existing qualifications doesn't necessarily, stop you from completing an apprenticeship.
Hopefully this has got you thinking that an apprenticeship programme could be good for your business. If you are not sure where to start, we suggest taking a free one-hour no-obligation appointment with one of our CIPD qualified L&D consultants who can help you start to create a plan, before going out to a find a provider.
So what apprenticeships are available in the legal sector?
There are now a number of legal specific qualification routes, which are aimed at different levels. They are;
General legal services
Chartered legal executive
Specialist legal services
Probate technical (although you probably won’t be able to find a training provider for this one at the moment)
Obviously there are lots of other subject areas available through the apprenticeship programme, such as digital marketing, business admin, learning & development, IT application, purchasing to name just a few.
We think that many SME law firms are overlooking this amazing opportunity to up-skill existing staff, to take on new talent and to keep training budgets under control.
Green Shoots Learning provides businesses with as much help and support as they need to make an apprenticeship programme a huge success.
