September? Already? How did that happen? The kids have all gone back to school and normal routines have resumed. Whilst you have all been laying on your sunbeds and enjoying the summer, Jemma has been working hard and studying for her Mental Health in the Workplace accreditation. This involved lots of pre-course work and a 2-day course at an accredited centre where she learnt the course inside out to be able to deliver it within the workplace.
At Green Shoots we wanted to train ourselves up to be able to deliver this because we believe that it is the right thing to do. Mental ill health is something that has a lot more media time than it used to and workplaces are a lot more accepting and have much more understanding however we don’t believe all workplaces are where they should be yet.
Jemma spent lots of time researching the right course that would allow us to deliver the right message. Having been trained by a different company previously she had an idea of what she was and wasn’t looking for. There are quite a few companies out there that offer a variation of the course however she found and chose one that is in line with the Health & Safety Executive and is the most relevant within the workplace. There are 3 different levels that can be trained out which will appeal to a larger variety of workplaces.
Studies show that stress within the workplace is at an all time high. There are lots of things that can contribute to stress and there are also lots of things that can make it worse. Not having the right understanding, not managing the person in the correct way (as a manager or as a colleague), having a workplace that doesn’t support employees are all factors that can cause further issues. Stress isn’t the only issue. There are other mental ill health conditions that employees could have and without the correct support they are more likely to take time off with the condition. That’s not to say that by having an understanding and/or support structure in place that the person wouldn’t still take time off with the condition, but it is much less likely. Did you know that 11.5 million working days are lost as a result of stress, anxiety & depression at an estimated cost of £5.2 billion to industry, individuals and the government. This astonishing figure has come direct from the Health & Safety Executive. At Green Shoots we want to do our bit to help support those who are suffering, unnecessarily, within their workplaces without the right support and help from those around them. And we want to be able to help those who are in a position to help and make a difference others.
Let’s not forget that the most important aspect here isn’t about the time an individual could be taking off, it’s about giving that person the right support and understanding that they need and deserve in order to help them. Mental ill health is not a sign of weakness. To be dealing with mental ill health and carrying on with everyday life is far from weak. And just because someone has suffered from stress or any other mental ill health it is not a reflection on their character and it doesn’t mean that they are unreliable as an employee, with the right support their resilience can be built upon and they can come out the other side stronger than before.
Jemma is currently waiting for her final accreditation to come through (which should be within the next week) and once we get this, we will be able to offer Levels 1, 2 & 3 Mental Health in the Workplace (VTQ)
