The Power of Delegation

Course Overview


This is a extremely practical workshop which looks at what can be achieved in a team or working relationship when the power of delegation is used correctly. If you or someone you know is 'the first and the last in the office' or you regularly hear yourself say 'I would just love some more time', then this workshop is for you. Sometimes having outstanding time management skills can't help and delegation needs to be considered. The workshop looks at the obstacles people have with delegating tasks and how to overcome them. It also looks at the delegator and asks how to appreciate other peoples strengths and not to judge by your own standards.


Course Prerequisites


People wishing to attend this workshop should already be in a position where they manage and provide work for at least one member of staff.  The principals of delegation can be applied to any work situation so the level of management or the number of staff involved is irrelevant.


Overall Aim


For each delegate to leave understanding how and when delegation should be used.





  • Be able to describe the excuses for not delegating tasks

  • To understand what your personal barriers are (if you have any)

  • Be able to describe micromanagement and why it can be bad practice

  • To demonstrate the process for choosing tasks for delegation

  • To describe the process for picking the perfect delegate for the job

  • What is micro-management and why should we try and overcome it?

  • Judging people on their merits and not our own

Section 2
  • Don't eat the elephant - can the task be segmented?

  • How to assess whether a task should be delegated or not

Section 3
  • What skills, knowledge and competencies are required for the task?

  • How does culture impact on delegation?

  • Assessing a team member for their strengths and weaknesses

  • Investigate current workload and other commitments

  • Consider whether the task could be a development opportunity

Section 4
  • What makes a delegation plan

  • Appropriate level of detail

  • Monitoring progress and quality

  • Preventing the work coming back to you

Lorna Rose Lorna has worked in the training arena for over 14 years and is City & Guilds qualified and a member of the CIPD. She has worked in-house for a number of professional service businesses and concentrates on designing, writing and delivering effective, engaging and enjoyable workshops.
